Whistler header

Although the resort is best known for it’s skiing, there are a number of good climbing crags in the area, as well as a vast amount of fantastic alpine hiking and climbing. The two crags to the north of Whistler village are into a slight dryer climatic region, and are often quite pleasant during the wet Squamish spring and fall.

Location

whistler mapAll of the crags described on this page are reached via highway 99, between 110 and 160 km north of Vancouver.
Cal-Cheak
111 km north of Vancouver, or 12 km south of Whistler, turn east into the Cal-Cheak recreation area. About 2 km past the Cheakamus river bridge park in the gravel pit. The climbs are north of the road
Nordic Rock
Right in Whistler, between the Creekside and main villages. Turn south into Nordic estates, and park on Garibaldi Way, keeping mind of the parking restrictions posted on the signs. A trail leads past the condos to the cliffs.

Green River Bastion
29 km north of Whistler, the cliffs of the Green River Bastion are obvious on the west side of highway 99. Park in the gravel pit just before the rail crossing. A trail heads north along the rail line then turns west to the cliffs
Lillooet Edge
51 km north of Whistler. Take highway 99 past Pemberton to Mount Currie, then turn onto the Duffy Lake Road. 12 km later, the cliff is visible at a switchback on a steep hill. Park here, and walk 150m to the climbs.

The Climbing

The rock in the Whistler area is generally more metamorphosed and featured than the smooth granite walls nearer to Squamish. Face climbing predominates, especially at Nordic, although some of the best routes require some gear.
Cal-Cheak
Cal-Cheak offers a wide variety of climbs, both gear and sport ranging from 5.7 to 5.13.
Nordic Rock
Mainly sport climbing on some very interesting, highly featured rock.
Green River Bastion
This 200m cliff offers some great climbing in a fine situation. Lots of variety, from cracks and corners to edgy faces. Often very hot in the summer, but a good option when Squamish is still wet in the spring or fall. Bring a rack.
Lillooet Edge
Similar to Green River Bastion, though not nearly as tall.
